If you don’t currently have a deck attached to your Denver, CO home but you’re looking to have one built, this can be a very exciting time. As you can imagine, when it comes to building a deck if you can dream it, you can achieve it.

Not only will you need to establish your desired square footage, you’ll also want to take several other things into consideration.

  • What type of materials do you want to use?
  • What types of features interest you?
  • Do you want the deck to be alongside the side of your home, or would you prefer to have your deck facing your back yard?
  • Lastly, how much money do you have set aside to pay for design and construction costs?

Deciding the deck’s function

This may seem like a silly point to consider, but when it comes to designing your ideal outdoor space, you need to figure out why you want it. Do you want a safe outdoor space for your children to play, or do you want to use your deck as an outdoor extension of your dining room? Will your deck primarily be used for relaxation? Are you building it because you want something to wrap around your swimming pool?

Once you’ve established your goals for your deck you’ll have a better starting point when it comes to having it designed.

Where do you want to put it?

If you want to use your deck as a way to enjoy the great outdoors (and the 300+ days of sunshine), but your back yard gets a lot of shade, you may want to consider putting the deck on the side or front of your home.  If one side of your home has a great view, but the other side of your home faces the neighbor’s house, you’ll likely want to use the side that’s more scenic.

How intricate do you want it?

This can also be a silly question—but you may be surprised to learn that decks don’t have to be simple.

You can add a number of different features such as flower boxes, railings, built-in seating and more.  Remember, a more intricately designed deck will cost more than something that’s basic, so you’ll want to account for this when you’re establishing a budget.

Choose your materials wisely

When it comes to deck construction there are a number of different types of materials you can use including weather-resistant woods, pressure-treated woods, hardwoods, composite decking and alternatives, like aluminum or plastic.

If you have questions about the pros and cons of different types of decking materials, or you’d like to know more about the average lifespan you can expect to get out of each one, we can help
